Afro going from Cabo to Tokyo

I set out to create a story not just an album, but a single, unfolding narrative. It follows the journey of José, a man traveling from the shores of Cape Verde to the heart of Japan. Through José, I explore my own heritage, carrying the rhythmic soul of Africa into a land of Zen and discipline.

My fascination with Japan goes beyond the surface. I am deeply moved by their culture, the gentle way they nurture children, and their legendary work ethic. This project is a bridge between two worlds, the sundrenched roots of my family’s past and the refined beauty of a culture I deeply admire.

Lyrics

1. Santiago in my Veins

Ten drops of land in the deep blue Atlantic
Every island has a spirit, wild and romantic
From the dust of the desert to the mountain height
A different rhythm for every island in sight

It’s more than the map, it’s the blood in my veins
The scent of the ocean, the dust of the plains
Though I may wander, my heart stays behind
In the arms of the mother, the best of her kind

Oh, Cabo Verde, where the trade winds blow
Ten different worlds in a rhythmic flow
From the salt of the sea to the fire in the sky
Every island has a different reason why

Sal is a cradle made by the salt of the sea
White sands stretching as far as the eye can see
But head to Fogo where the black peak stands tall
A kingdom of ash where the giants feel small

Where the fire once flowed, now the adrenaline flies
Boarding down the volcano under sapphire skies skies
Snowboarding the black dust, a ride fast and free
The heartbeat of Santo is calling to me

In Santo Antão the green valleys are deep
While in São Vicente the Mindelo dreams never sleep
Boa Vista has dunes like a golden Sahara dream
And Brava is the flower that grows by the stream

Oh, Cabo Verde, where the trade winds blow
Ten different worlds in a rhythmic flow
From the salt of the sea to the fire in the sky
Every island has a different reason why

Maio is quiet with secrets in the sand
Santiago is the heart, the pulse of the land
São Nicolau hides the dragon trees old
And Santa Luzia has stories untold

Ten islands, one soul
From the salt…
To the fire…
My roots run deep, my love is pure
Santiago keeps us whole
Santa catarina, terra de meu amor

2. Passport stamped, bags packed

Passport stamped, bags packed, heavy on the floor
Leaving all the static at the sliding door
Thirteen hours in a silver tube
Chasing the sun, changing the mood
I’m crossing lines, I’m cutting ties
With the ocean reflection in my eyes

I’m bringing the beat to the East, yeah
Landing in the land of the rising sun
From the Shibuya crossing to the mountain peak
I’m letting the rhythm run
Tokyo, turn it up, let the speakers shake
Bringing the beat for the world to wake
Vacation mode, but the bass is loud
Losing my soul in the neon cloud

We bring the vacation
To Tokyo station
Drums from the bay
To the neon nation
Ocean in my headphones
Heart on the kick drum
Afrobeat walking
Down Shibuya in the sun
Yeah
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat

Neon signs dripping in the rain
Bullet train speed, running through my veins
Harajuku colors, Ginza style
Walking through the city for a thousand miles
I brought the heat in a suitcase line
Mixing my heart with the Tokyo skyline

Flipflops hanging
From my backpack strap
New town
Same rhythm
In a bamboo snap
Rice bowl steaming
Laughing in the steam
Salt on my shoulders
From a different dream

We bring the vacation
To Tokyo station
Drums from the bay
To the neon nation
Ocean in my headphones
Heart on the kick drum
Afrobeat walking
Down Shibuya in the sun
Yeah
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat to Japan
We bring the beat to Japan

Shinto bells and digital hums
Waiting for the moment that the drop comes
One, two bring it back
Wow bring it back

3. Afroman dancing in Japan

Linen shirt flowing in the Tokyo breeze
Mixing West-Side rhythm with the Japanese trees
Staying in Narita, felt like a king
Hear the Koto play while the highhats ring
Pattern on my fabric, batik in the neon light
Afroman stepping through the Shinjuku night

I am an Afroman dancing in Japan
Bringing Cabo heat to the island clan
From the drums of the coast to the heart of the bay
I am lighting up the night in a brand new way
Shibuya crossing, watch the rhythm expand
Bringing the soul to the sunrising land

Sixty days deep, yeah, I’m already here for two months
Seeing all the beauty, not just seeing it once
The people show me love in every city I tread
From the kindness in their hearts to the words that are said
Temples in the morning, neon lights when it’s late
Every single person makes the journey feel great

Golden chains clinking over black and white streets
Chopsticks in my hand but I’m keeping the beats
Talking in the clubs where the subbass swells
Mixing J-pop vibes with the talkingdrum spells
They never saw the flow move quite like this
A Fuji mountain high and a rhythmic bliss

Ancestors watching from the red, Torii gate
Merging two worlds, yeah, it’s written in fate
One drum, one soul, one plan
The Afroman vibe across Japan

Across Japan, ohh
Across Japan, ahh
Across Japan, ahh

Oho, oho
Oho, oho
Oho, oho

4. Hard to find love in Tokyo

Walking down the Shibuya crossing stream
Thousands of faces, like a waking dream
I ask for the way and they bow so low
But there’s a wall behind the “hello”
The lights are bright, the streets are clean
But I’m searching for something in between

Oh, it’s hard to find love in Tokyo
Where the kindness is high, but the water is shallow
Everyone’s sweet, like a sugarcoated shell
But I’m locked outside of the stories they tell
Yeah, it’s hard to find love in Tokyo

Izakaya laughter, a crowded room
Cherry blossoms starting to bloom
We exchange the smiles and the perfect words
But the heart’s own voice remains unheard
“Sumimasen” for the space I take
How much of this warmth is just for show’s sake?

I don’t need another polite goodbye
I want the truth, I want the “why”
Break the surface, let the feelings leak
It’s the silence of the soul that I seek

Oh, it’s hard to find love in Tokyo
Where the kindness is high, but the water is shallow
Everyone’s sweet, like a sugarcoated shell
But I’m locked outside of the stories they tell
Yeah, it’s hard to find love in Tokyo

Super sweet…
but never deep
Lost in the glow of Tokyo

5. Going home west alone

I was sitting in Tokyo, looking at the neon light
Thinking ’bout my people, yeah, it didn’t feel right
The sushi is amazing and the trains are on time
But I missed the homies and the way we used to rhyme
I had a craving for some soul food, maybe a little rum
Missing all the places that I used to be on
So I packed up my bags, didn’t think it through
I’m going back home, that’s what I’m gonna do

I’m taking a vacation, heading to the West
Leaving Tokyo behind, giving Japan a rest
No regrets in my heart, just stories to tell
From the land of the rising sun, where I’ve been doing well
Yeah, I’m coming home

I landed at the airport, the sun was shining bright
The air felt different, everything felt right
Walked into the block with a suitcase in my hand
Bringing back the magic from a far away land
I told ’em ’bout the temples and the Shibuya Cross
How I lived like a king, yeah, I lived like a boss
I showed ’em my photos, the gadgets and the gear
Everyone was shouting, so happy I was here

And we started the music, let the bass line roll
That Tokyo spirit mixed with a little bit of soul
Nobody was sleeping, we were dancing in the street
Listening to the stories over a heavy hitting beat

We feasted on the grill, we danced until the dawn
I forgot for a second that I’d ever been gone
But the cherry blossoms call me, and the lights do too
I gotta head back soon, I got work to do
But I’m leaving with a smile, my cup is running o’ver
Until the next time I walk through that front door

Yeah, heading back to Tokyo…
But I brought the party with me…
See you next time, homies…
Afroman’s out

6. Coming back again

From the rush of Shibuya, to the temple’s quiet grace
Japan is calling out to me, such a magical place
Neon lights are flickering, like stars in the city night
Walking through Tokyo, everything’s shining bright
Crossing through the crowds, where the ocean of people flows
In TeamLab’s digital water, where the magic grows

Oh, Japan calling, my heart skips a beat
From the Shinkansen speed, to the rhythm of the street
Culture and adventure, found on every single bend
Where the future and the past start to blend
Japan calling, I’m coming back again

In Kyoto’s wooden alleys, where the Geishas softly tread
Through Fushimi’s thousand gates, painted in a ritual red
Nara’s deer are bowing, asking for a little treat
While I find a Ryokan, for a rest that’s bittersweet
Gazing at Mount Fuji, from a steaming onsen bath
Finding moments of silence, on this mountain path

Takoyaki in Osaka, street food flavors on the tongue
Akihabara’s manga stores, where the night is always young
Nintendo’s new museum, where the legends come to life
PokéPark is waiting, far away from all the strife

Oh, Japan calling, my heart skips a beat
From the Shinkansen speed, to the rhythm of the street
Culture and adventure, found on every single bend

Where the future and the past start to blend
Japan calling, I’m coming back again

Yeah, Japan calling, from the mountains to the sea
Pack your bags and fly away, come and wander there with me
Japan… oh Japan…
I’m coming back again

7. Christmas on a Afrobeat
